Let your phone do the remembering

Get reminded the next time you message someone

Borrowed a book? Owe someone an answer about Saturday? A clock-based reminder will go off at the wrong moment. In Reminders, open the item's details, turn on When Messaging and pick the contact. Apple says the reminder appears the next time you chat with that person in Messages.

Details & sources

It only works for conversations in Apple's Messages app, so it won't help with WhatsApp or other chat apps.

Get reminded when you get into the car

A location reminder can fire when you arrive home — or when your iPhone connects to your car over Bluetooth, which is exactly when "drop off the parcel" is useful. Apple notes that location-based reminders need Reminders to have access to your precise location in Location Services.

A grocery list that sorts itself

Change a list's type to Groceries and Reminders places each item into a category such as Produce, so the list follows the shop instead of the order you remembered things.

Details & sources

On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later), Reminders can also suggest grocery items from text in another app, such as a recipe open in Safari. Apple Intelligence isn't available in every language or region.

AnyList, for households that plan meals

AnyList isn't a general to-do app, so it isn't in our selection. But if most of your shared list is food, it is built for exactly that: a shared shopping list that sorts into categories you can rearrange to match your store, plus a recipe box.

AnyList details & plans →

Pricing Free to download. AnyList Complete costs $9.99 a year for one person or $14.99 a year for a household. [1, 2]

Details & sources

The app is free to download. AnyList Complete — $9.99 a year for one person or $14.99 a year for a household — adds the meal-planning calendar, recipe import from websites, and access on Mac, PC and Apple Watch. Its App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.

If the same shared list also has to hold non-food errands, a general app from our selection is the simpler choice.

Things has no iPhone trial

Cultured Code offers a 15-day trial of Things only on the Mac. The iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro versions are one-time purchases with no trial; the company explains that App Store trials are only available to apps with in-app purchases or subscriptions.

Details & sources

If you don't have a Mac, read Things' limitations in our selection before paying $9.99 — especially if anyone else needs to see your list.

About these picks

Most forgotten errands aren't really forgotten. They're remembered at the wrong time: the parcel comes to mind on the sofa, not at the door. This week is about triggers — reminders tied to a place or a person rather than to a clock — plus a shopping list that organizes itself.

Everything below was checked against official sources on 9 October 2026. None of it has been hands-on tested by us yet.
