Facts, limitations & testing
  • Free and made by Apple. Its App Store listing covers iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. [1]
  • You can share a list with people who use iCloud. They can add, edit and complete items, and you can assign an item to anyone on the list. [2]
  • A reminder can fire at a date and time, when you arrive somewhere or get into a car connected over Bluetooth, or the next time you message a chosen contact. [3]
  • A list set to the Groceries type automatically sorts items into categories such as Produce. [4, 5]

Limitations that matter

  • Checked Everyone on a shared list must be signed in to an Apple Account with Reminders turned on in iCloud, so it's a poor fit if anyone in the household uses Android. [2]
  • Checked Apple says some features work only with reminders stored in iCloud, not with other accounts. [5]
  • Our view It's built for lists, not for planning a day. Dated reminders show up in Apple's Calendar, but if you want time blocks and habits in one place, look at TickTick.

Our view

Reminders is easy to overlook because it comes with the phone. That's a mistake: Apple's current guide describes shared, assignable lists, reminders tied to places and people, and a grocery list that sorts itself. For a household that lives on iPhones, it is the sensible starting point, and many people will never need more.
